Tim Flagler [1] attributes to Anthony Bourdain [2] the theory of buying the best ingredients you can and then trying not to fuck them up. I can’t source that original quote but it seems both Bourdainish [3] and solid advice for fly tying.
Find and buy nice hooks. Splurge for the more expensive thread. Grab a really nice, uniform glass bead in a color that knocks you out. Since you’re not buying a bunch of materials for each fly, and not buying a bunch of materials in total you can do this effectively.
Same goes for tools. Want to spend a bundle on scissors? Go for it, you only have to have one (good) pair why shouldn’t you?
