If you come back to this site in a year from now, this section may be completely different 1. Today, right now, I find using synthetic hair to be easier to tie with than natural hair such as deer or elk hair.
For my dry flies (and the bigger terrestrial I tie), I use Enrico Puglesi EP Fibers. This stuff is really cool. It’s uniform so you don’t have spend a lot of time prepping it. It comes in a range of colors (to the extent that’s important) and it floats great. Takes floatant well too.
As important, it forms a really nice, consistent wing on dry flies. It’s really easy to work with. What’s not to like? Well, it’s synthetic and therefore it’s another plastic that’s potentially going into the environment. I suspect, I’m going to start trending away from this and convert to using natural materials here.
No judgement though, I think using barbless flies is a more impactful change than using synthetic materials. Still, I sure do put a lot of flies into trees above and beneath the waterline. Maybe I should be more mindful of what is attached to those hooks.
